PEN & PAPER POINT!

We often do listen to music because it soothes our souls. Whether it is rap, rnb, neo-soul, afrofusion, urban, trance, rock, gospel riddim or reggae, each of us is taken to that special place. More often we are swayed by some beats (me included…i admit) but do we really take the time to appreciate the words?? In short, have you ever listened to a jam and you go like…’That’s my song! because it makes so much sense at that particular moment in your life? Well I have experienced this a million and one times and I ask myself who wrote the song. This is why I introduce a pen & paper point to pay homage to songwriters and composers from all over the world. They may not be in the spotlight per se but their light really shines bright through their gallery of words.

Of course we cannot disregard the artists who voice these words in melodious tunes but I would like to keep you in the know about these marvelous songwriters. And at least you will have a chance to get the lyrics right…(don’t hide your face, I wont tell on you am just saying). So today I begin with John Legend’s  All of Me…Ladies, yes I know;looks-check, voice-check. John legend is an incredible singer cum songwriter and having written this song, I first salute and then bow down. Image

The inspiration behind this song comes from non other than his soul mate and fiancee,  model Chrissy Teigen, who apparently cried when he first sang it to her. WHERE ON EARTH ARE OTHER MEN OF THIS CALIBER?? I WANT! http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=30323

ALL OF ME LYRICS

[Verse]
What would I do without your smart mouth
Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
Got my head spinning, no kidding, I cant pin you down
Whats going on in that beautiful mind
Im on your magical mystery ride
And Im so dizzy, dont know what hit me, but Ill be alright

[Bridge]
My heads under water
But Im breathing fine
Youre crazy and Im out of my mind

[Chorus]
Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
Ill give my all to you
Youre my end and my beginning
Even when I lose Im winning
Cause I give you all, all of me
And you give me all, all of you

[Verse]
How many times do I have to tell you
Even when youre crying youre beautiful too
The world is beating you down, Im around through every move
Youre my downfall, youre my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I cant stop singing, its ringing, in my head for you

[Bridge]
My heads under water
But Im breathing fine
Youre crazy and Im out of my mind

[Chorus]
Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
Ill give my all to you
Youre my end and my beginning
Even when I lose Im winning
Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all, all of you

Cards on the table, were both showing hearts
Risking it all, though its hard

[Chorus]
Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
Ill give my all to you
Youre my end and my beginning
Even when I lose Im winning
Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you

I give you all, all of me
And you give me all, all of you

THE COMEBACK

THE COMEBACK

Traded on dangerous ground
Lost and found
Creased and torn
Resilience born

Smoke from the fire that burnt
Lessons learnt
A blow on the face
Now immeasurable solace

A downfall drowned natural hope
A consistent drop
Cruelly cornered
Today, remarkably honored

Took puffs of life’s pungent smoke
Paralyzed by its stroke
Cannot explain the healing wave
The dark past, I shave

Mentally, physically and emotionally disabled
Risky bomb wire or cable
Provocation of suicide
But I chose to continue the ride

Insolent surroundings, plastic smiles
Borrowed patience, waited for a while
Hummed my favorite song
Finally came along

FATAL ATTRACTION

FATAL ATTRACTION

I first met you
My knowledge saw its roots
Your creation indefinitely satisfied the Master’s view
Your eyes to blame for the bright beam on my face
At the brink of death with the rogue thirst for your embrace
Was that my heart? Had it just skipped a beat?
My introversion for a moment conceded defeat
The sound of your voice, breathtaking
Something must have been in you that i had been lacking

Everything in my mind stood still
The passion in me strong, I could feel
The strength of your laugh
Enough to lift me above
The facial expression
I am not strong enough even to mention
The intensity grew strong competing with the baobab tree
What could it have been?
I could hardly breath!

You held my hand
To part with it i was reluctant, I don’t understand
The slithery fear crept in
Was I losing independent me?
Since then, you set a camp on my mind
Looks crystal, I have fallen this time
Someone pick me up please
Am down on my knees
I never wanted to fall down with a thud
I could be hurt, bruised and bad
A fatal attraction, one of a kind
If only a gateway I could find
To loosen these chains
And screen the maybe aftermath pain

I WANT BUT…….

I WANT BUT.......

I want to write
but my words are swallowed
I want to recite
but the sun set and my voice followed

I want to walk
but my feet threaten to strike
I want to talk
but my tongue is tied

I want to break free
but my desires clash with reality
I want to fly but my wing instincts are buried under naivety

I want to learn
but life’s lessons are unsystematic and abrupt
I want to recover
but the trauma of insensitivity on my brain is wrapped

ENIGMA

ENIGMA

Overreaction, contradiction
Need for compensation
Regret ironed in exaggeration
Continuation or termination?
Loss for consumption
Fear of rejection
In search of an identical section
Depression

Long for, long to be, emotion
Hope for consideration
Battle with justification
Web of confusion
Bulk of memory retention
Dug my portion
Fell in motion with caution
